Understanding the Numbers
What These Ratings
Actually Mean
Course Rating
The expected score for a scratch golfer (0.0 Handicap Index) under normal conditions. A Course Rating of 72.1 means a scratch golfer is expected to shoot approximately 72 on that course. This number is evaluated by a certified USGA rating team for each set of tees.
Slope Rating
How much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer (≈20 handicap) vs. a scratch golfer. The standard is 113. A Slope of 142 (Moose Run Creek) means the course is significantly harder for higher-handicap players relative to scratch players. Slope is used to convert your Handicap Index into a Playing Handicap.
Playing Handicap
The strokes you actually receive on a given course and tee. Calculated from your Handicap Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating – Par). This ensures you always compete fairly regardless of which tees you're playing from or how difficult the course is that day.
